Label materials

Apart from paper as the most familiar label material, plastic labels are becoming increasingly popular; especially for specific fields, such as the packaging industry. The potential uses of foil labels are extremely varied; owing to their specific characteristics, foils have some significant advantages over paper. For example, they are more resistant to environmental impact and are more robust and less prone to tearing than paper. We stock a wide variety of materials for labels. Here is just a short summary.

Paper labels

Standard paper (vellum)

The cheapest of all label materials is as a rule easy to print on. Owing to the simple surface, depending on the thermal transfer ribbon used, the colour does not absolutely opaque. However, a satisfactory print quality can always be expected. Application: Pricing, logistics

Chromolux paper

Provides a better surface quality than vellum paper; it is mat or glossy and can be printed on without any problems, good colour coverage and good printed image.

High-gloss paper

This cast-coated paper provides a supremely smooth surface, is always high-gloss, easy to print on with excellent coverage and a very good printed image. Purpose: Superior optical demands

Foil or plastic labels

Polypropylene, polyethylene

The environmentally friendly plastic labels are temperature-resistant up to approx. 80° C, waterproof and to some degree resistant to chemicals.  Excellent colour coverage and very good printed images are characteristic of the printing quality. If resin ink ribbons are used, a high degree of scratch resistance is achieved.

Polyester

Polyester labels are temperature-resistant up to approx. 150° C and are characterised by a high degree of resistance to chemicals and high tear resistance.

Adhesives for labels

The aforementioned papers and foils are available with a wide variety of adhesives for many different applications. Some label manufacturers supply over 50 different adhesives. Each adhesive is suitable for a specific purpose. Label adhesives in warmer climates, for example for taking stock of camels in the Sahara have a different composition to the adhesives used for marking the underside of ice floes at the south pole for the purpose of researching the mating behaviour of whales. A fundamental distinction is made between removable and non-removable adhesives and/or labels. If no special adhesive properties are required, so-called multipurpose adhesives are used.
