Working with barcodes can be subdivided into three areas: printing, reading and decoding.
For reading, the choice of scanner is of crucial importance. There are various technologies that are each tailored to meet the requirements of different specific applications and atmospherical conditions:
- Optical wand readers for reading by touch
- Linear imager scanners for reading at a short distance up to 50cm
- 2D imager readers for reading two-dimensional symbologies
- Laser scanner for reading from a greater distance
- Decoders also known as “wedges” that accept data from numerous input devices via a single port on the host computer.
Handhelds Handhelds combine the advantage of a consumer PDA with that of a high-end industrial mobile computer (IMC) in a robust housing. Like the PDAs the product is small and light in weight and, like the high-end IMCs, it provides targeted functions and greater connectivity.
