Fully Automatic Labelling of Large and Small Containers (Robot) – Type VRMO

The expectations that labelling machines should be flexible are constantly rising while at the same time the degree of automation demanded in production is also ever-increasing. Where owing to slow retooling the label transfer stations used to date are fast becoming unattractive, BBK is now backing sophisticated robot technology. If several labels are to be processed, which vary greatly in terms of format, the robot automatically changes the tool required.

A robot labelling machine is subdivided into 3 sections: robot, label dispenser/label printing system and the label transfer unit. Thanks to the fact that several projects have already been implemented, in all 3 sections a variety of alternatives are available to you. The whole system has a modular structure and any configuration is feasible.

With these systems the robot assumes the task of removing the label at thedispensing edge of the relevant printer or dispenser. It positions the label on the product and strokes, rolls, presses or blows it on. To pass the labels on to the corresponding transfer unit various label dispensers (for labels 0-250 mm in width) and thermal transfer printers are available. Combinations of, for example, 2 dispensers for hazardous goods labels and 1 thermal transfer printing system for a logistics label are no problem. The appropriate configuration depends on your application. Depending on the length and characteristics of the labels we either use vacuum plates, vacuum tapes or vacuum plates with airboxes (blow-on unit). Thanks to the flexible programming of the robot the transfer station traverse can adapt completely to the shape of the products (e.g. roll-on circular movement for vats corresponding to their circumference). When developing transfer tools, apart from the precision functions of the components used, attention must be paid that they are light in weight. By observing specific criteria it is possible to attain full functionality as well as the commensurate speeds of the individual robot axes.

Labelling on vats and HDPE transport containers (IBC)

This version is used to apply up to 2 hazardous goods labels (100 x 100 mm) and a logistics label (110 x 297 mm) to various types of containers.
Owing to the chaotic order in which the products are infed, the machine must change over fully automatically between labelling a 4-vat pallet and a 1000 L transport container. Both products are labelled on a pallet-rotating station. After the first side of the product has been labelled (upto 6 labels on the vat pallet), the 2nd side is processed. Since there is a big difference between the label formats, the tool (vacuum plate) is also automatically changed by means of quick release mandrels.

Labelling single, double and triple pallets

This version was designed for labelling different pallets stacked on top of each other with up to 18 labels. The cycle time for this is 90 seconds. The pallets are fed into the machine. At this moment we receive information about the pallet number and its origin. At this point in time the LabelsPlatform 3 Produktmanager searches for the relevant data record in the product database, which is linked to the merchandise management system via a standardised interface.The data record contains the parameters such as the label position 1 - 18 and the printing data. The product manager transfers the printing data via the network interface (10/100 Mbit/s) to the printer and the label position to the robot. A scanner mounted on the robot arm verifies the dispensed label and ensures that the label has been applied and that the data it contains are correct. After working through the respective pallet a report is made back to the merchandise management system and the pallet is conveyed out of the machine.

Double-stroke labelling of axle springs

In view of the fact that solutions available on the market to date have been very awkward to handle in terms of the optimal setting for a specific type of spring, BBK has designed a machine for the double-stroke application of flag labels to chassis springs by means of a TWINrobot.

The machine is connected to an upstream system that determines the axle group oft he respective spring. Depending on the axle group various label layouts are provided with variable data and these are made available to the machine's transfer stations by the two printing systems. To avoid long download times for the print jobs the label layouts are stored on memory cards in the two printers. This means that only the variable data are transmitted and the label allocated according to the axle group is selected. At the same point in time that the printing data are transmitted 2 2D barcode scanners on the machine outfeed are parameterised to check if the right label is located on the right product. However, beforehand the labels are applied around the desired spring coil in the shape of a U and shaped into a flag thereafter. The desired overlap of the two ends of the label is checked by 2 camera systems. Retooling times for this application were reduced from 45 minutes to less than 15. And once the product has been taught in the parameters can be conveniently uploaded from the program memory on a 10.4" touchpanel. This reduces the time required for a product change to less than 5 minutes.
